The working yarn has to be on the right hand side needle, use the spare DPN and knit with the left hand side needle with this working yarn (from the right hand needle).

You just knit (no need to purl) and automatically you get the stockinette stitch on the outside and garter stitch on the inside.
The item (ball, pipe etc ) grows towards you , as you knit on DPNs or circular needles.
If the circular needles are too long for the number of knitted sititches, use the magic loop method
