Switching from purl stitch to knit stitch, and from knit stitch to purl stitch

While switching from knit to purl stitch, bring the working yarn from back to the front ( in between the two needles). While switching from purl to knit stitch move the working yarn from front to back ( in between the two needles.
In the pattern instructions SL2 means slip 2 stitches together knitwise, then K1 and passing P2SSO the two slipped stitches over the knit stitch. For this to work properly , don't knit the previous round too tight around the middle stitches, keeping them loose allows room for passing 2 slipped stitches over the subsequent knit stitch. The whole SL2-K1-P2SSO creates a nice (stockinette stitch) raised center, It also curves the leaf inwards.
A few videos helped to clarify some techniques such as SL2-K1-P2SSO , where SL2 stands for slip two stitches together knitwise, knit one, and P2SSO stands for pass two slipped stitches together over the knitted stitch just like binding off.
Most helpful video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=en3Yq2er4RI that demostrates the centered double decrease.
It appears that 24" circular needles are too long for the 5 leaves, with together take about just 10"
so, i transferred these stitches from the circular needles to 3 DPNs , by distributing 2 leaves on
the first DPN, 1 leaf on the 2nd DPN and the last 2 leaves on the 3rd DPN.
I didn't join in the round, but directly proceeded with the first SSK, which automatically joined
the needles in the round.
The DPNs are 7" long and size US 5, if they become too small to knit as the knitting progresses, i'll transfer
the stitches to the circular needles.
The leaves are facing outwards, and the inner part is growing inwards.
If the circular needles are too long, then use the magic loop method, with the circular needles otherwise, just use 3 DPNs and 1 DPN working needle.
